What do I need to have my own website?

Let’s start with the basics you need before we answer actual website design questions.

We can organise all of these for you, or you can do it yourself.

A NAME

For example www.romanbritons.co.uk or apple.com

These are registered at different authorities, dependent on your country, and cost a set fee per year.

A HOST

A company who will rent some space on one of their computers for the software, pictures and words that make up your website. Their computers are always on, so your website is always available. There is a monthly or annual fee for their services.

A WEBSITE DESIGNER

A company who will build your website for you (like us!). If you have the skills, you can do this part yourself.

WEB DESIGN SOFTWARE

We have invested in state of the art software, so that your website will look fabulous and will be easy for both you and your customers to use. This saves you hundreds of pounds compared with buying it yourself. Of course, you don’t have to use software as good as ours, but not doing so will make it that bit harder to build a great site in a short time.

How long will it take to build my site?

As with cost, that depends on how complex you need your site to be, and how prepared you are. We can build and make a site live in under a week.

You can help us to keep the time down by being prepared. For example supply the images you want to use; have the words you want ready in a word document (or similar); know which menu items you want. Take a look at some websites you like for inspiration. Decide what you want your website to do – what will your customers want from your website?  For example, it could be information on what you do and how to get in touch – on the other hand, some customers may require an automatic purchasing or booking process. There are also many things you can add onto a site – either as part of the initial build, or later on as your needs change (such as social media integration, automated sales funnels and so on).

We have a range of short articles that touch upon the various things you need to think about or we can talk you through the things you need to think about if you would like.

Contact us if you’d like to know more, we offer a free consultation and there’s no obligation to buy.

How do you control cost and time?

Martin is an experienced project manager. Before we start we will agree what you want and we will sign a contract that shows what you will do and what we will do. If either of us needs to change anything after that, we will agree any impact on cost and time  (if any at all) before making the changes. For you, this will keep both the cost and time down and for us it will help us to deliver when we say we will.

How much does it cost to build a website?

A-ha, the $64 million dollar question. The good news is that so far every site has been under $64 million!

The real answer is it depends on how many hours work we have to do. The less hours we work, the lower the cost to you.

Our sites run from £500 ($750) upwards. A site like this, with a fully prepared customer (see below), could cost this. We have invested in state of the art software, designed to give you a fabulous site that is easy for both you and your customers to use. If you wanted to take the DIY route and build your own site, this software alone would set you back hundreds of pounds. We try very hard to give you best quality at best price.

What happens once my website is complete?

Once your website is live, it is really just the beginning of its life! There are three main areas to think about.

UPDATING YOUR CONTENT

Your website will need constant care and attention to ensure it is up to date with your latest information and offers. In the “real world” nobody runs a physical shop in July that has posters in the window advertising their previous January sale, do they? What would customers think? It’s the same with your website, but you would be amazed how many websites have long out of date information on them. People never re-visit out of date sites.

We will design your website so that you have three choices on how to keep your content up to date:

  1. You can update the content yourself – the cheapest (free!) and fastest option.
  2. You can contract us to do it for you – you can focus your time on running your business
  3. You can contract a third party to do it for you.

KEEPING YOUR SITE SECURE

The second thing to think about is security. You don’t want your website to be hacked (in other words somebody manages to access the administration area and make changes to your site, or steal you or your customers’ information).

Sometimes people say to me things like “oh, but my site won’t interest hackers”. Let me tell you, that just isn’t true. Most targets are completely random, carried out by programs that don’t care what your site is about; they are just programmed to find sites they can break into, and they try thousands every single day  – sadly it is almost guaranteed that your site will be attacked within its first year. For example, a site we built for a small business that delivers quarry stone on the Scottish border was attacked in the first two weeks, once from Japan and once from the Ukraine! We are delighted to say our client was completely unaware until we showed him the record of attempted logins to the admin area of his site. He was unaware because these attacks were unsuccessful. We need to make sure such attacks fail to get into your site too.  You can read more about this here.

As with content updates:

  1. You can choose to do this yourself (only recommended if you are tech-savvy)
  2. You can contract us to do it for you
  3. You can choose a third party to do it for you
  4. The only choice that is a bad choice is to do nothing at all. Think of that as having a real world shop and leaving the front door open every night.

We offer maintenance packages that cover keeping content up to date, keeping your website secure, or both. Prices start from as low as £10 per month.

CHANGING THE DESIGN

As your business grows, your needs may change. You may wish to add new features to your site. We love to keep in touch and see how our customers are getting on.
